TotalEnergies Launches Third Phase For Iraq's GGIP Development

TotalEnergies, along with Basra Oil Company and QatarEnergy, has laid the foundation for the final two significant components of Iraq's multibillion-dollar Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a milestone upstream and energy transition project.

The new deals also include the full development of the Ratawi oil field, increasing production to 210,000 bpd in 2028 with no flaring on a regular basis, and the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP), which will deliver 5 million barrels per day of treated seawater to the oil fields of southern Iraq. The seawater system will reduce the reliance on freshwater supply from the Tigris and Euphrates and allow pressure maintenance for giant reservoirs.

These milestones follow earlier GGIP milestones in 2025 that initiated a 300 MMcf/d gas processing plant and a 1 GW solar power facility. The four integrated schemes put together - oil, gas, solar, and water - are Iraq's largest upstream energy partnership, set to boost output, reduce emissions, and supplement power supply.

The Ratawi field development started in 2023 with Phase 1 aiming for 120,000 bpd by the beginning of 2026. All the related gas from Ratawi - approximately 160 MMcf/d - will be flared and treated through the midstream gas project, feeding power plants with up to 1.5 GW capacity, sufficient to meet 1.5 million Iraqi houses.

During its construction peak, the GGIP will employ more than 7,000 Iraqi staff members, boosting the country's upstream industry workforce and providing long-term energy independence. TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné called the projects "a best-in-class example of our multi-energy transition strategy," and said that the company has lived up to its commitments in Iraq two years after the effective date of the agreement.
