Pertamina and Halliburton are teaming up to push unconventional well construction and stimulation technologies in Indonesia's onshore oil fields. They just signed a memorandum of understanding-basically, they're planning to test out multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, acid stimulation, and some advanced cementing techniques. On top of that, they want to bring in closed-loop automation and artificial intelligence to sharpen up drilling and fracturing performance.

Both companies see this partnership as a shot in the arm for Indonesia's aging oil and gas fields. They want to help the country crank up domestic production by squeezing more out of wells that have been around a while, using a mix of unconventional techniques that work together.

Pertamina's President Director, Simon A. Mantiri, calls the agreement a big step in modernizing the company's upstream operations. He's betting on advanced tech and international know-how to bring new life to old fields and lift national oil output. "With the support of advanced technology and global expertise, we are confident that mature fields can be revitalized and optimized to unlock their full potential, enabling the fields to, once again, be productive and contribute to national energy production," he said.

Halliburton, for its part, sees this deal as a way to expand its unconventional completions work across Asia Pacific. The company's noticing more interest in bringing North American-style fracturing and stimulation to Southeast Asia. Martin White, Halliburton's senior VP for Asia Pacific, put it like this: "Halliburton integrates proven unconventional methodologies with localized reservoir insights to improve performance, strengthen local capabilities, and deliver technology-based solutions that maximize asset value for our customers. Our team brings global experience to local field operations to improve stimulation effectiveness and optimize production."

Bottom line, this new agreement signals that Indonesia is moving faster to adopt unconventional oil and gas strategies. Operators here are eager to use the latest completion designs and digital tech to pull more from older, trickier reservoirs.
