Polyimide is a high temperature resistance, wear resistance and a high performance engineering plastic. Processing profiles ( sheets, bars, pipes, etc ) and finished parts, mainly used in the manufacture of gaskets, bearings, valve seats, seals, transmission parts, insulation parts and other parts are widely used in aerospace, military, electronic and electrical devices, chip semiconductors, auto-mobiles, precision instruments, industrial robots, plasma cutting and other fields. Some of the Polyimide products offered by Thankful Material are base polyimide resin, graphite modified polyimide, PTFE modified polyimide and electrically modified polyimide etc,.

The global polyimide industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9% from 2022 to 2030.The polyimide industry is growing due to the rising demand for polyimide in a variety of sectors, including electronics, aerospace, and healthcare :

Polyimide films are used to insulate parts and wiring in electronic devices, such as smart-phones and auto-mobiles. The growing demand for flexible displays, flexible solar cells, and flexible printed circuit boards is driving the market.

  • Flexible printed circuits (FPCs) : Polyimide is used as a film substrate for flexible copper-clad laminates (FCCL), which are used to make FPCs. FPCs made with polyimide are an advantage over rigid printed circuit boards (PCBs) and are used in handheld and wearable devices.
  • Flexible cables : Polyimide is used in flexible cables, such as the cable that connects a laptop's display to its main logic board.
  • Insulating film : Polyimide is used as an insulating film on magnet wire.
  • Motor coils : Polyimide is used for motor coils.
  • Wire coating : Polyimide is used for wire coating.
  • Semiconductors : Polyimide is used for dielectric/passivation layers for semiconductors.

Polyimide is used in the electronics industry because of its many beneficial properties, including: high thermal stability, mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and good dielectric and insulating properties.

Aerospace

Polyimide films are used in aerospace due to their high heat resistance, electrical insulation, and high strength.

Polyimide is a versatile material with many uses in the aerospace industry, including:

  • Insulation : Polyimide is used in insulation for aerospace wires, avionics, flight controls, and navigation.
  • Structural components : Polyimide is used to make structural parts, seals, and gaskets for aircraft.
  • Engine housings : Polyimide is used in aerospace engine housings.
  • High-temperature adhesives : Polyimide is used as a high-temperature adhesive in the semiconductor industry.
  • Carbon fiber composites : Polyimide carbon fiber composites are used in non-loading structural components in aircrafts, weapon systems, and space vehicles.

Properties

Polyimide is a polymer that has many desirable properties, including:

  • Thermal stability : Polyimide can withstand extreme temperatures, ranging from near -270℃ to above 400℃.
  • Chemical resistance : Polyimide is highly resistant to chemicals and organic solvents.
  • Dimensional stability : Polyimide maintains its shape and size across a broad temperature range.
  • Electrical insulation : Polyimide is an excellent electrical insulator.
  • Low dielectric constant : Polyimide has a low dielectric constant.

NASA's Langley Research Center has developed high-temperature adhesives using polyimide for the Composites for Advanced Space Transportation Systems (CASTS) and Supersonic Cruise Research (SCR) programs.

Polyimide is a thermoset plastic with many applications in the healthcare industry, including:

Medical tubing

Polyimide tubing is used in a variety of medical devices and applications, such as vascular catheters, due to its chemical resistance, flexibility, and burst pressure resistance.

Implants

Polyimide is a primary polymeric material for many implant applications, especially neural implants. Its biocompatibility means it causes little tissue reaction when implanted in the body.

Other medical applications

Polyimide is also used in cardiovascular catheters, retrieval devices, push rings, marker bands, angioplasty, stent delivery devices, neurological devices, electrical insulator applications, and drug delivery systems.

Polyimide films are used in the healthcare business due to their great tensile strength and temperature tolerance.
