BP Strengthens Commitment To Azerbaijan With $2.9 Billion Gas Project And Exploration Expansion

Leave a message

BP has solidified its long-standing partnership with Azerbaijan through a series of strategic agreements, including a $2.9 billion investment in the Shah Deniz gas field and new exploration licenses in the Caspian Sea. The deals, signed during Baku Energy Week, reinforce BP's role as a key energy player in the region while supporting its broader strategy to grow upstream production.

Key Developments

1. Shah Deniz Compression Project ($2.9 Billion Investment)

BP and partners have approved the third phase of development for the Shah Deniz gas field, one of the world's largest.

The project will install an unmanned compression platform to extract low-pressure gas, extending the field's production life.

Expected to yield an additional 50 billion cubic meters of gas and 25 million barrels of condensate, with first gas targeted for 2029.

Supports BP's goal to increase global upstream production to 2.3-2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMboed) by 2030.

2. New Exploration Agreements

BP secured access to two new Caspian Sea blocks (Karabagh oil field and ADUA area) in partnership with SOCAR, holding a 35% operating stake in each.

Türkiye's TPAO will join BP and SOCAR in the Shafag-Asiman block, taking a 30% stake to accelerate development of its gas condensate resources.

These moves align with BP's strategy to boost reserves replacement and sustain long-term production.

Strategic & Environmental Benefits

Long-Term Growth: The Shah Deniz expansion ensures continued gas supply to European markets, while solar and electrification initiatives aim to reduce operational emissions.

Strengthened Partnership: BP's 33-year presence in Azerbaijan includes major projects like the ACG oil field, BTC pipeline, and Southern Gas Corridor.

Financial Alignment: The investments fit within BP's capital framework, with Shah Deniz among 8-10 major projects set to launch by 2030.

Leadership Perspective

Gordon Birrell, BP's EVP of Production & Operations, emphasized the company's commitment:
"Azerbaijan remains a cornerstone of BP's upstream strategy. These agreements unlock further resources, extend production, and reinforce our pledge to deliver reliable energy while advancing lower-carbon solutions."

The deals underscore BP's dual focus on expanding hydrocarbon production and exploring sustainable energy solutions in a key strategic region.
