Sintana Energy has announced the successful drilling and logging of the Mopane-2A well, located in the core of Namibia's Orange Basin, under Petroleum Exploration License 83 (PEL 83). This license is managed by a subsidiary of Galp Energia from Portugal. Sintana holds an indirect 49% interest in Custos Energy (Pty) Ltd., which possesses a 10% working interest in PEL 83. Additionally, NAMCOR, the National Petroleum Company of Namibia, also owns a 10% stake in the project.
Significant Discoveries at Mopane-2A
The Mopane-2A well has identified hydrocarbons in two separate reservoirs:
AVO-3 Reservoir: A gas-condensate column with a thin net pay found in the optimal zone of the reservoir.
AVO-4 Reservoir: A smaller reservoir containing light oil.
Both reservoirs feature high-quality sands with excellent porosity and permeability, strong pressures, low fluid viscosity, minimal CO2 levels, and no detectable H2S. As with previous wells in the Mopane region, there were no water contacts observed.
Future Plans and Exploration Efforts
Galp Energia and its partners will continue evaluating the data gathered from Mopane-2A to enhance their understanding of the Mopane field, which will assist in determining the commercial potential of the discovered resources.
As part of the ongoing exploration and appraisal efforts in the broader Mopane area, the drilling rig is being moved to the Mopane-3X exploration well (Well #5). This well will target two stacked prospects, AVO-10 and AVO-13, with drilling expected to commence around January 1, 2025.
Comments from the CEO
Robert Bose, CEO of Sintana Energy, highlighted the significance of the discovery, saying, "The continued success at Mopane showcases the extraordinary scale and quality of the field. We are excited to progress with further exploration and appraisal activities, which will help to fully assess the exceptional potential of our position in Namibia's Orange Basin."
Sintana Energy and its partners remain optimistic about the future of the Mopane area, aiming to build on these promising results in one of the world's most exciting oil and gas exploration regions.
