Product Introduction

Our premium Tension Packers are retrievable, mechanical-set downhole tools engineered to create a reliable annular seal between the tubing string and casing wall in oil, gas, and water injection wells. Specifically designed for shallow to medium-depth wells where sufficient set-down weight is unavailable for compression packers, our tension packers are set by applying upward tension to the tubing string, delivering exceptional sealing performance for pressure from below the tool, with stable holding capacity under moderate pressure differentials.

As an economical, compact, and easy-to-operate zonal isolation solution, our tension packers are widely used in water flood operations, conventional oil/gas production, formation treating, squeeze cementing, and remedial well workover. Built to API 11D1 / ISO 14310 standards, every packer undergoes strict pressure and load testing to ensure consistent performance in harsh downhole environments, withstanding extreme temperatures, corrosive fluids, and dynamic well conditions.

Application Scenarios

Our Tension Packers are optimized for the following downhole operations :

- Water Flood & Water Injection Wells: The most widely used application for tension packers, providing reliable zonal isolation for water flood projects in shallow reservoirs where set-down weight is limited.

- Conventional Oil & Gas Production: Isolating production zones to prevent cross-flow, optimize reservoir drainage, and improve production efficiency in shallow to medium-depth wells.

- Remedial Well Workover & Well Servicing: Ideal for squeeze cementing, perforation repair, and zone isolation during workover operations, with quick run-in and retrieval to minimize downtime.

- Formation Stimulation & Treating: Suitable for moderate-pressure acidizing, matrix stimulation, and chemical injection operations in low-pressure, shallow reservoirs.

- Shallow Gas Well Completion: Cost-effective zonal isolation solution for shallow gas wells, with reliable sealing performance to prevent gas migration.

FAQ

Q: What is the core difference between a tension packer and a compression packer?

A: A tension packer is set and held in place by upward tension on the tubing string, with a unidirectional slip design optimized to hold pressure from below the tool. A compression packer is set via set-down weight on the tubing string, with bidirectional slips to hold pressure from both directions. Tension packers are the preferred choice for shallow wells where sufficient set-down weight is unavailable, while compression packers are better suited for deeper wells with high pressure from both above and below.

Q: What is the maximum recommended well depth for a tension packer?

A: Our standard tension packers are optimized for shallow to medium-depth wells, typically up to 5,000 ft (1,524 m). For deeper applications, we offer high-strength, heavy-duty models with enhanced tensile ratings, suitable for depths up to 8,000 ft (2,438 m) under moderate pressure differentials. We do not recommend tension packers for ultra-deep wells with high hydrostatic pressure, as differential pressure can make retrieval difficult.

Q: Can a tension packer hold pressure from above?

A: A tension packer is primarily designed to hold pressure from below, which further energizes the seal and slip grip. It can hold pressure from above only as long as the resulting downward force is less than the sustained tension maintained in the tubing string. If the downward force from upper pressure exceeds the tubing tension, the packer will release and move down the wellbore. For applications requiring bidirectional pressure holding, we recommend our compression-set or hydraulic-set packers.

Q: What elastomer material should I choose for my sealing element?

A: The material selection depends on your well's temperature, fluid composition, and corrosive conditions:

- Nitrile (NBR): Ideal for standard oil wells with temperatures up to 300°F (149°C), excellent oil resistance and cost-effectiveness.

- HNBR: Best for higher-temperature wells up to 400°F (204°C), with superior chemical resistance and abrasion performance for moderate H2S environments.

- FKM (Viton): Recommended for sour service wells with high H2S/CO2, high temperatures up to 450°F (232°C), and highly corrosive chemical environments.

Q5: Can the tension packer be reused after retrieval?

A: Yes, our tension packers are fully retrievable and reusable, provided the tool is in good condition after retrieval. After each run, inspect all components for wear, damage, or corrosion, replace the sealing element and any worn parts (slips, springs, shear pins), and perform full functional and pressure testing before re-running the tool. We offer full spare parts kits and reconditioning services for all our packer models.

Q: What casing grades are compatible with your tension packers?

A: Our rocker-type slip design ensures secure setting and grip in all standard casing grades, including J55, K55, N80, L80, P110, and premium high-strength casing grades. For special chrome or corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) casing, we offer non-damaging slip options to prevent casing wall damage during setting and retrieval.

Q: How do I prevent premature setting of the tension packer during run-in?

A: Premature setting is almost always caused by improper run-in procedures. To avoid this:

Never rotate the tubing string counterclockwise during run-in.

Lower the assembly at a controlled speed, avoiding sudden stops, rapid movement, or excessive jarring.

Ensure the J-slot mechanism is fully locked in the running position before lowering the tool into the wellbore.

Follow our recommended run-in procedures strictly, with no upward tension applied to the tubing string until you reach the target setting depth.

Q: Do you offer custom sizes and designs for non-standard wellbores?

A: Yes, we provide full custom design and manufacturing services for tension packers. We can customize the tool OD/ID, thread connections, material configurations, pressure/temperature ratings, and release mechanisms to match your specific wellbore dimensions, casing specifications, and operational requirements. Our engineering team will work with you to develop a tailored solution for your unique well conditions.

Q: What certifications do your tension packers have?

A: All our tension packers are manufactured in compliance with API 11D1 / ISO 14310 standards for downhole packers. Our manufacturing facility is ISO 9001 certified, and we can provide API monogrammed products upon request. All units come with full material traceability, hydrostatic test reports, and mill test reports (MTRs) for critical components.

Q: What is the lead time for standard and custom tension packers?

A: For standard size tension packers (2-7/8" to 9-5/8" casing) with standard material configurations, we typically have inventory available for immediate shipment, with a lead time of 3-7 working days. For custom-sized packers or specialized material configurations, the lead time ranges from 15-30 working days, depending on the complexity of the design and material availability. We will provide a detailed delivery schedule with your order confirmation.
